Fresh from the success of the Super Stock-dominating Cobra Jet Mustangs, Ford President Semon “Bunkie” Knudsen directed his steely gaze at the SCCA Trans Am road racing series, where Knudsen’s former employer—Chevrolet—was a consistent threat. Having played crucial roles in the Camaro’s success in the Trans Am, Knudsen and his fellow GM defector Larry Shinoda knew exactly what was needed for victory. Using many engine components from the GT40 program, the factory-backed racing Boss 302 developed approximately 500 HP at an otherworldly 9,000 RPM. Production versions were rated at 290 HP at 5,800 RPM, but there was plenty more on tap at its 7,000 RPM limit. The unique street 302 CI engine also benefited from many of the technological advances drawn from the 289 CI engines developed in the Cobra and early GT40 programs. Knudsen also made it clear he wanted “the best-handling street car available on the American market,” which it certainly was for a time. A comprehensive restoration was completed on this multiple MCA First Place award-winning 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Fastback in 2005. Retaining the original sheet metal, buck tag and matching-numbers drivetrain, it is correctly finished according to its build sheet in yellow with a black interior, factory Magnum 500 wheels with correct reproduction Goodyear F60-15 Polyglas GT tires, the original spoilers and rear-window Sport Slats. Topped with rare chromed-steel valve covers, the DOZE-6015-A 302/290 HP Boss engine is mated to a Hurst-shifted 4-speed behind a new clutch and pressure plate. This garage-kept Boss 302 Mustang shows just 61,000 believed-correct miles on the odometer and is documented with the original build sheet, shipping invoice and more than 20 years of ownership history.
