This 427-powered 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray Convertible was awarded Bloomington Gold Certification in 2014 after a detailed frame-off restoration to factory standards. Introduced in 1965, the Mark IV big-block V-8 engine heralded a new age in Corvette development. The Corvette engineering team had long resisted the idea of using big-block power, the only available option then being the truck-sourced “W-head” engine, a heavy piece displacing first 348 CI and then 409. That changed in 1961, when engineer Dick Keinath of Zora Arkus-Duntov’s performance engine group ordered the development of a new big-bore engine of the same architecture, but using a new cylinder head that facilitated significant improvements in combustion-chamber design. The resulting Mark II engine was first seen in a series of racing specials built by Mickey Thompson soon after the 1963 Corvette’s introduction in late 1962, one of which placed third in the 1963 Daytona 250-mile race. In 1965, the solid-lifter 396/425 HP Mark IV replaced the 327/365 HP small-block as the most powerful carbureted Corvette engine; in 1966, displacement was increased to 427 CI, and a second, milder version featuring a hydraulic cam was introduced. Designated L36, its output surpassed that of the discontinued fuel-injected small-block, generating 390 HP at 5,200 RPM and 460 lb-ft of torque at 3,600 RPM. The matching-numbers L36 427/390 HP V-8 powering this Bloomington Gold-certified 1967 convertible is equipped with off-road exhaust and mated to a 4-speed manual transmission. A gorgeous frame-off restoration correctly finished in Ermine White with a red stinger and red leather interior, it comes with both a black vinyl auxiliary hardtop and a new white soft top. Additionally optioned with a tinted windshield, speed warning indicator, shoulder harness belts and an AM/FM radio, it is documented with the original tank sticker and a voluminous book of paperwork and receipts that includes known ownership history.
