The year 1965
was a watershed moment in Corvette history. There were typical trim changes to
keep things fresh: a new black grille insert, new lower sill trim and new wheel
covers simulating the increasingly popular spoked aftermarket wheels. The hood
depressions and simulated side scoops disappeared, the latter replaced by three
functional vertical vents per side. Upgraded vinyl seat upholstery, new molded
inner door panels, retractable seat belts and more legible instrument faces
contributed to improving the interior accommodations. As comprehensive as these
improvements were, the most significant upgrades were of the mechanical
variety, the most notable being 4-wheel disc brakes as standard equipment and
the addition of the big-block Mark IV V-8 to the engine lineup. The Mark IV
would succeed the Rochester fuel-injected small-block V-8 at midyear, but not
before one final fling at its highest power rating ever: 375 HP at 6,200 RPM
and 350 lb-ft of torque at 4,600 RPM. At 1.15 HP per cubic inch, it was the most
power Chevrolet had ever extracted from the workhorse 327. The power had been
found in redesigned ports, new valves and revised cam timing. The heads were
new castings with larger ports to accommodate 2.02-inch intake and 1.60-inch
exhaust valves, both controlled by a new solid-lifter cam. That exhilarating
brew of power, torque and screaming small-block exhaust note are at the heart
of this incredibly beautiful Rally Red 1965 Sting Ray coupe, which boasts an
odometer reading of just 15,358 miles and a stunning presentation after a
no-expense-spared frame-off restoration. In addition to its matching-numbers
L84 327/375 HP fuel-injected engine and Muncie 4-speed, it features a bright
white on red interior, side exhaust and goldline tires on finned-aluminum
knock-off wheels, Soft Ray-tinted glass, a teakwood steering wheel and AM/FM
radio. A truly magnificent restoration, it is accompanied with the original
owner’s and shop manuals, and the original color brochure as well.
