That Pontiac’s
excitement continued into the 1970s was unique, as most other brands had
abandoned performance marketing for more pedestrian fare. This Trans Am was
designed and released to commemorate Pontiac's 50th anniversary in 1976, and it
is one of 319 Y82-package non-T-top coupes produced for the program. Sold new
at Kole Pontiac GMC in Oak Lawn, Illinois, it was also one-family owned until
2014. Of course, few knew at the time it was released that this model would
become even more popular when Burt Reynolds wheeled a 1977 version around for
the movie “Smokey and the Bandit.” Underneath the hood of this Special Edition
Trans Am is the matching-numbers WX-suffix 455 CI HO V-8 engine—1976 marking
the final year of its production. By then, this was one of the largest engines
still available from Detroit. Topped by a Rochester 4-barrel carburetor, this
is backed by the factory-original 4-speed transmission, complete with Hurst
shifter. It was highly optioned with air conditioning, power windows and locks,
factory 8-track tape player, bucket seats and reflective dash accenting. The
exterior showcases fresh paint, complete with gold stripes and “bird” hood
graphics, and the car has both the shaker and rear-window louvers. However,
much of it remains just as built, featuring the original interior, wheel trim
rings, trunk matting, unused original mini spare wheel and even the original
gas tank. Riding on factory honeycomb-type wheels, there are new BF Goodrich
tires on all four corners. In addition to associated PHS documents, provenance
includes the original invoice and financial paperwork, factory owner’s manual
and a PHS window sticker. The 50th Anniversary emblem was installed upside down
from the factory and has been left that way. The décor of the 50th Anniversary
Trans Am is instantly recognizable, and they are among the most desirable cars
of the post-1971 era.
