It was muscle
for the everyman, and Plymouth’s Duster 340 was a popular package during its
brief window of production. This example from 1972 hails from the final season
of combining this well-respected Chrysler small-block and the first-generation
Duster styling, which has come to represent this model best on the modern
market. Ordering the Duster 340 that year not only got you the so-called
sharks-tooth vertically ribbed grille and special graphics with a tornado
motif, but it also got you street notoriety and, for many younger drivers in
that era, often promised a reduced insurance premium over a similar big-block
model. This fastback body from Plymouth was very popular overall among buyers,
most of whom optioned for slant-six or pedestrian 318 engines. That stated,
many built with the 340 powerplant were driven very hard, leaving those cars
who are still here today less common than might be imagined. This car is
painted in rare factory-correct TX9 Formal Black with white longitudinal
striping, which beautifully accents the body lines. Under the hood is factory
electronic ignition, an orange snorkel-design air cleaner covering a 4-barrel
carb, and factory exhaust manifolds leading to dual exhaust and chrome tips.
Behind the engine is the 4-speed transmission and a street-friendly 3.23
final-ratio rear axle. The body showcases the 340 displacement at the end of
the stripes, on the rear panel and on the air-cleaner lid. Open the door and it
is all business with the black bench-seat interior, round wood-grain knob Hurst
floor shift, functional factory gauges and AM radio, the latter assisted by an
upgraded Kenwood CD stereo with auxiliary input. Engine RPM is monitored via a
SunPro Super Tach II unobtrusively mounted in a lowered position. Rallye wheels
and factory-dimension tires complete the respectable appearance of this car. A
blast from the early 1970s dressed in black, today this Duster 340 retains
style to make you smile.
