This 1956
Mercury Montclair Convertible was the subject of a painstaking concours-level
restoration by Carriage House Automotive Restorations in New
Lenox, Illinois, to like-original specifications. Famous for its
dedication to authenticity and attention to detail, Carriage House’s
restoration has been rewarded with a plethora of awards, including AACA First
Place Junior, Senior, Junior Grand National and Senior Grand National First
Place Awards. Produced at the Los Angeles assembly plant, this spectacular “Big
M” Montclair convertible is one of 7,762 built and one of few extant today.
These were among the very best luxury cars of the period, with quality and
style that outshone many of their contemporary competitors in the luxury field.
Powered by the 312/225 “Safety Surge” V-8 mated to a Merc-O-Matic transmission,
this 1956 Montclair came standard with a number of advanced mechanical features
highlighted by a “Multi Luber” power lubrication system. Tastefully finished in
the rare “Flow Town” two-tone color scheme, its black and red paint are
separated by the Montclair’s distinctive “lightning bolt” side spears and by
Montclair-only chromed borders defining the upper sections of each door.
Exterior optional extras included wide whitewall tires, dual outside spotlight
mirrors and fender skirts. The equally impressive red and white vinyl interior
showcases advances introduced in Ford’s Lifeguard safety program, among them a
deep-dish steering wheel, padded door panels with inset handles, a breakaway
inside mirror and a padded dash and sun visors. It additionally includes a wide
array of optional equipment that includes power steering and brakes, a four-way
power seat, power windows, power soft top, heat and defrost, Travel Tuner
radio, tissue dispenser and a Day/Night mirror. The 1956 Montclair convertible
offered a grand open-air motoring experience, and it remains a genuine pleasure
today.
