Shipped new from Yenko Chevrolet in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, to
Grossman Chevrolet in Minneapolis, Minnesota, this 1969 Yenko Super Camaro is
one of 201 produced that year. Dealer Principal Don Yenko began converting
Camaros to his own specifications in 1967, including swapping in the
Corvette-sourced L72 427 CI engine. Packed with a forged bottom end, forged
aluminum 11.0:1 pistons, a high-lift, solid-lifter cam and a Holley 800 CFM
4-barrel on a high-rise aluminum intake, it was a seriously potent engine rated
at 425 HP and it was central to the Yenko’s brutish character. However, the
cost of these conversions was considerable, and selling the leftover L78 blocks
was not an easy task, so in 1969, Yenko turned to Chevrolet Product Promotions
Manager Vince Piggins, who shepherded Yenko’s request for factory-built
427-powered Camaros through the Central Office Production Order system. By
1969, Yenko had assembled a network of 36 dealers to sell his Super Car
conversions, and it is believed that he was responsible for specifying the two
COPO orders that constitute the full-bore Yenko Super Camaro package. First was
COPO 9561, which, in addition to the L72 427/425 HP engine, specified a
cowl-induction hood, curved-neck four-core radiator and F41 performance
suspension. The COPO 9737 Sports Car Conversion Package added power front disc
brakes, a 13/16-inch front sway bar, BE-code special heavy-duty 4.10
Positraction rear end, 15x7-inch wheels and a 140 MPH speedometer. Buyers also
had a choice of a 400 Turbo 3-speed automatic or the Muncie M21 close-ratio
4-speed transmission in this exceptional example. The subject of a body-off
restoration in 2004, the car is brightly finished in Daytona Yellow with a
black vinyl roof and black standard interior. Because most Yenko Camaros were
raced as intended, engine attrition was common and finding one such as this
with the original factory-installed drivetrain intact is a true rarity. Listed
in the Yenko Registry, this rare 1969 Yenko Super Camaro is offered with COPO
Connection paperwork.
