Of all the cars to emerge from
the 1960s, the 1969 Dodge Daytona literally has no equal. This example is one
of 503 Dodge Charger Daytonas produced that summer to homologate this body for
NASCAR racing, and unlike the later Road Runner-based Superbird, the Daytona
was built around the aerodynamic Charger 500. Adding its special nose and rear
wing were among other changes done at subcontractor Creative Industries. Under
the hood is a 440 Magnum V-8 engine with the 4-barrel carburetor and dual
exhaust, backed by a Torqueflite automatic transmission. The car is finished in
the scarcely seen combination of Y2 Yellow with black stripe and black
interior. It is also equipped with power steering. Inside are headrest-topped
bucket seats and center console with wood-grain applique, chrome floor shift
and pushbutton radio. In addition to 14x6-inch styled road wheels and redline
tires, trim includes chrome exhaust tips, front fender scoops, flip-top gas cap
and Daytona stripe lettering. Outrageous from day one and beautifully presented
today, the special Dodge offered here remains exclusive.
