As documented in the official Shelby Registry, this 1968 Shelby, number 03897, is one of 518 GT500KR convertibles produced. Finished in Highland Green with black interior, the Shelby is equipped with C6 automatic transmission, factory air conditioning, power steering, power front disc brakes, upgraded radio and Shelby 10-spoke aluminum wheels with Goodyear Eagle GT tires. At midyear 1968, Carroll Shelby made the decision to replace the GT500’s Police Interceptor 428 with the new 428 Cobra Jet with 335 HP and revised the name to GT500KR for “King of the Road.” At the A.O. Smith Company, 1968 Mustangs were updated into Shelbys with fiberglass body panels, including front fascia with larger grille opening, fog lamps and hood with forward-placed scoops, while the rear end incorporated a duck-tail spoiler and Thunderbird sequential tail lights. Inside, the 1968 Shelbys were equipped with the Deluxe interior, special console, a dual gauge pod and roll bar for convertibles.
