Mercury’s Cougar entered the
supercar battle at midyear 1969 with the Eliminator, a hardtop-only image car
with spoilers and stripes. Unlike the Mustang’s Boss 302, the Eliminator was
available with several engine choices—351, 390, 428 Cobra Jet or Boss 302. This
Competition Orange model is one of only 2,250 Eliminators produced for 1969
and, of those, it is one of just 260 powered by the S-code 390, an FE big-block
with 320 HP and plenty of low-end torque. Optional equipment includes power
steering, power front disc brakes and C6 automatic backed by a 9-inch rear end
with 3.50 gears. The popular 15x6-inch Magnum 500 wheels have been added. The
Eliminator defied the Cougar’s luxury reputation by adding performance
amenities like Competition Suspension, front chin spoiler, rear wing, hood
scoop, midbody stripe and blackout grille. The interior was also updated with
high-back bucket seats and unique instrument cluster with tach.
