Here is an unrestored example
of the 1968 Mustang hardtops that were factory built for Southern California
Ford dealers. Inspired by Shelby’s “Little Red” GT500 prototype, the California
Special was essentially a low-cost coupe dressed up with Shelby-style
fiberglass components that included an integrated rear spoiler, rear panel with
1965 Thunderbird tail lights, and side scoops. The GT/CS package also added a
blackout grille with rectangular fog lamps, louvered hood, body-side and
rear-deck stripes, pop-off gas cap and chrome script emblems. Only 4,117
California Specials were produced, most powered by a 6-cylinder or base
2-barrel 289 CI V-8. However, this Lime Gold example is equipped with the
J-code 302, a 4-barrel small-block that produces 250 HP. The unrestored
California Special is also optioned with the C4 automatic transmission, Ivy
Gold interior, factory air conditioning, styled steel wheels, power steering
and power front disc brakes.
