For much of its history, Chevrolet produced sensible, value-rich automobiles, but all that changed with the debut of its handsomely styled passenger cars of 1955-57. An all-new and powerful small-block V-8 engine—the work of Chevrolet Engineering Chief Ed Cole and his team—made them virtually unbeatable. Following Cole’s promotion to general manager of Chevrolet in 1956, he quickly hired Vince Piggins, the wizard behind Hudson’s former NASCAR and AAA dominance, and moved him to Atlanta where they set up SEDCO (Southern Engineering and Development Co.) at Nalley Chevrolet. There, Piggins developed the infamous “Black Widow” fuel-injected racing Chevrolets for 1957 and wrote a detailed manual for Chevrolet dealers to build their own. While propelling Buck Baker to the 1957 NASCAR Grand National championship, the AMA (American Manufacturers’ Association) racing ban that year halted Chevrolet’s aggressive factory racing program. A few fuel-injected Chevrolet road cars were built for ’57 nonetheless, with the $550 option ensuring low production. Powered by the matching-numbers 283/283 HP engine driving a column-shifted 3-speed manual transmission and Positraction differential, this factory fuel-injected 1957 Chevrolet 150 Utility Sedan is the visually striking product of a frame-off restoration with approximately 81 miles since completion. Finished in two-tone black and white paint with black and gray patterned vinyl upholstery, this purposeful and rare Chevrolet is equipped with Bendix power brakes, a split front bench seat, radio and heater delete, tinted glass and vacuum-powered windshield wipers, and it rides on black-painted steel wheels mounting small, bright hubcaps. A multiple-award winner, it has also graced the lawn of the 2006 Meadow Brook Concours d’Elegance. Steeped in racing history and retaining the matching-numbers Fuelie engine, this fuel-injected 1957 Chevrolet 150 Utility Sedan is a rare and highly attractive cornerstone of NASCAR history and Chevrolet’s longstanding commitment to competition-level performance.
