Sold new at Al
Grillo Ford in Lynn Massachusetts
Maintained by its
previous owner for more than 20 years, this 1968 Shelby GT350 Convertible has
received a recent refresh in the original Raven Black paint. Powered by the
GT350’s standard J-code 302 CI V-8, the convertible is also equipped with the
desirable 4-speed transmission, power steering, power front disc brakes,
Tilt-Away steering column, Philco AM radio and power top. The popular Shelby
10-spoke aluminum wheels have also been added. A Marti Report documents the
convertible as a genuine Shelby that sold new at Al Grillo Ford in Lynn,
Massachusetts. After three years of building Shelbys in Los Angeles, Carroll
Shelby relinquished 1968 production to Ford, which moved final assembly to
Michigan’s A.O. Smith Company, where the GT350/GT500 Shelbys received updated
fiberglass body panels and other components to set them apart from regular
Mustangs. Most notably, the Shelby front end appeared totally different with
its larger grille opening, fog lamps and hood with a pair of forward-placed
scoops. The revised rear-end treatment incorporated a duck-tail spoiler and
unique rear panel with 1965 Thunderbird sequential tail lights. As the Shelby
Mustang shifted from all-out performance to more of a “Road Car,” as it was
described in advertising, the 1968 models were enhanced inside by the Mustang’s
Deluxe bucket-seat interior and unique console with padded Shelby armrest, dual
gauge pods and a roll bar for convertibles. All 1968 Shelbys came with the
Mustang’s heavy-duty suspension and extra cooling package. In traditional
Shelby fashion, the GT350’s 302 small-block was updated with a 600 CFM Holley
4-barrel on an aluminum intake, Cobra finned aluminum valve covers and oval
open-element aluminum air cleaner. Shelby Automotive produced only 404 GT350
convertibles for 1968. Of those, just 79 were painted Raven Black.
