Beautiful is one of the many
words that could describe the 1934 Ford Phaeton offered here, but it has so
much more than simple appearances. This car’s original owner was a woman from
Connecticut who wintered in California. Each time she went to the Golden State,
her car was loaded onto a flatbed train car and shipped to the winter home.
Today it remains highly original and shows a believed-correct 39,570 original
miles. In fact, the all-steel body still displays mostly original paint with
touch-ups at the front fenders, and the car is the recipient of an AACA
Historical Preservation of Original Features award. Phaetons could be had in
standard and deluxe form, and this one is the latter, with a 21-stud 221/85 HP
flathead V-8 engine featuring a downdraft carburetor and floor-shifted 3-speed
transmission. The exterior is covered in Brewster Green with accent striping,
complementing the car’s noteworthy body lines. Inside is the original leather
upholstery, complete with woodgrain interior accents, Hartford folding divider
windows and a manual folding canvas top with glass rear window. Also showing
style are dual side-mount spares with metal cases and leather straps. Exterior
touches in addition to that include the chrome grille, chrome headlamp bezels,
bumpers with bumper guards, cowl lamps and the Deluxe extra horn. With a chrome
windshield frame, draft deflectors and the legendary greyhound mascot on the
grille’s leading edge, the image of the 1930s Ford V-8 model line is completed
with green-painted wire wheels, chrome “V8” hubcaps and Firestone blackwall
tires. Top up or down, Phaeton models were both enjoyable and practical for
many buyers, especially in the era when auto air conditioning did not exist.
Whether it ends up back in Connecticut or California, or anyplace in between,
this very original Ford Phaeton is sure to continue making memories.
