Back in 1970 when this car was released, AAR was an interesting acronym. It stood for All American Racers, which was a race team operated by the legendary Dan Gurney. When Ford left racing, Gurney signed on with Plymouth for the season, and the special AAR Cuda model was created solely to homologate parts for the track-Plymouths driven by AAR team members like Swede Savage. As a result, the 1970 AAR special was a once-ever release, and the car offered here is one of them. Sold new at Mel Wolff Chrysler-Plymouth, Inc., in Chicago, it has already benefited from a complete rotisserie restoration. Setting this beautiful machine apart from the crowd is the rare and incredibly desirable In Violet High Impact paint, an extra-cost option that carried factory-code FC7. Under the hood is the 340 6-barrel small-block V-8 engine, the only time that powerplant ever came in any Plymouth model. This featured the trio of Holley 2-barrel carburetors atop a special intake manifold and a unique side-exiting exhaust layout with chrome tips. Behind the engine is an A833 4-speed manual transmission with associated Hurst Pistol Grip floor shifter and a Sure Grip-equipped 8.75-inch 3.91 differential. All AARs received heavy-duty shocks and suspension parts, including a fast-ratio steering box, and this model had the power steering and power brakes with front disc units as well. What really defined the car was exclusive AAR fiberglass equipment—the N94 hood with centered functional opening and associated hood pins up front, and a special aerodynamic decklid-mounted rear spoiler in back—and the black longitudinal strobe-like tape stripes ending in Gurney’s colorful AAR logo on the rear quarter panels. Inside are white front bucket seats, which were originally black, but changed to white to complement the stunning In Violet exterior finish. Other interior touches include the center console with shifter, the performance-oriented A62 Rallye instrument cluster and a Music Master AM radio. Finishing touches include the remote-operation color-coded driver’s-side mirror and Rallye wheels complete with Goodyear Polyglas tires. This no-reserve sale will include photos of this vehicle’s restoration, as well as a copy of its Chrysler Registry report.
