The Dodge Viper is what
happened when Bob Lutz and the Chrysler performance minds joined forces to
create a new American sports car. The second-phase Viper production saw the
introduction of the long-awaited GTS coupe, and as part of its race program,
Dodge produced a limited run of homologated specials. This 1998 Dodge Viper
GTS-R is No. 43 of only 100 examples built and shows 4,340 original miles on the
odometer. The road-going representative of the first American car to win Le
Mans since the Ford GT40 comes with its original welcome letter from Chrysler
Plant Manager John Hinkley, along with autographed photos of winning Team Viper
drivers. Under the long hood is a 460 HP version of the 8.0L V-10 good for 500
lb-ft of torque with sequential-port fuel injection and side-exit exhaust. The
engine is nestled into a tubular-steel space frame with integrated cowl
structure and backed up by a Borg Warner T56 6-speed manual transmission that
sends power to the rear wheels through a limited-slip differential. The tuned
fully independent double A-arm suspension works with power-assist
rack-and-pinion steering for race-proven road control. Ventilated 4-wheel disc
brakes help bring the coupe back from its 185 MPH top speed. Stone white and
blue stripe race livery helps define the sheet-molded composite body equipped
with the GT2 aerodynamics package that utilizes a front splitter, nose
winglets, aero plates, side sills and deck-mounted rear spoiler for enhanced
downforce. Inside the coupe is a black and blue leather-upholstered interior
with a serialized plaque mounted on the center console between bucket seats
with 5-point harnesses. Special GTS-R badging joins a set of BBS forged-alloy
wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport tires for homologated grip on public roads.
Viper GTS-R No. 43 comes with its extra set of keys and GTS-R car cover.
