Originally conceived in 1988
at Chrysler’s Advanced Design Studio, the Dodge Viper was the answer to
Chrysler Chairman Bob Lutz’ desire for a “re-imagined” Shelby Cobra. In
fact, Carroll Shelby himself drove a pre-production Viper in its nationwide
debut as the official pace car of the 1991 Indianapolis 500, just seven months
before production began in November 1991. The first-generation Viper’s
resin-transfer molded-plastic panels hid a welded tubular-steel space frame
incorporating race-tuned unequal-length A-arm all-independent suspension, power
steering and power-boosted 13-inch vented disc brakes, but its central feature
was its innovative all-alloy 8.0L/400 HP V-10 engine boasting highly efficient
sequential fuel injection, breathing through honest-to-goodness side
exhaust—yes, just like the Cobra—and mated to a 6-speed Getrag manual
transmission. The Viper’s design brief emphasized simplicity, a fact reflected
in its clean, orderly cockpit layout offering well-bolstered leather-covered
bucket seats, black-bezeled white-face gauges and well-placed controls. And
although the Viper delivered gobs of torque right out of the gate, its about-town
manners were among the best in the supercar category of the era. Because it was
first offered only in roadster form, the first-generation Viper RT/10 came
without exterior door handles or wind-up windows, offering instead detachable
side curtains and a fold-up fabric roof panel that could be stowed away in the
trunk. A very low-mileage example showing just 5,451 original miles, this 1995
Dodge Viper RT/10 roadster is one of only 298 factory finished in glowing Viper
Bright Yellow paint, in this case matched with a gray leather interior. This
well-preserved Viper comes complete with Michelin tires on 17-inch wheels, a
hardtop and soft top, side curtains, a car cover and tonneau cover, the window
sticker, vehicle shipping order and a protective bra.
