Documented with a Marti Report and the Eminger shipping invoice, this well-kept 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302 shows just 64,070 miles on the odometer. The Boss 302 was the product of a convergence of forces activated when the Sports Car Club of America instituted the Trans American Sedan Championship for the new class of 2-plus-2 “pony cars.” In 1968, GM vice president Bunkie Knudsen, fresh off overseeing the creation of the Camaro, defected to Ford Motor Company, where he brought his “race on Sunday, sell on Monday” philosophy to bear on the redesigned 1969 Mustang. One of the first fruits of his influence was the Boss 429, designed to homologate the 429 “semi hemi” engine for NASCAR. The dust had barely cleared from the ensuing publicity when Knudsen served up the Boss 302 aimed directly at wrenching the Trans Am Championship away from Chevrolet, whose Z28 Camaro Knudsen had created in collaboration with designer Larry Shinoda. With Shinoda now at his side at Ford, the two had applied their experience to the Mustang, endowing it with a virtually bulletproof, high-revving 302 CI small-block V-8 with 10.5:1 compression, a forged-steel crank and rods, forged-aluminum pistons and high-flow heads from the 351 Cleveland engine for a factory rating of 290 HP, a typically misleading figure that actually approached 400 HP. The 1970 Boss 302 was only available with a Hurst T-handle-shifted Borg Warner 4-speed manual transmission, and included Competition Suspension, power front disc brakes, color-keyed racing mirrors, quick-ratio steering, a functional front spoiler, full instrumentation and special Goodyear Polyglas GT tires. Sold new at McRobert Motor Co., Inc., in Gresham, Oregon, and finished in yellow with black Boss stripes and a black high-back bucket-seat interior, this 1970 Boss 302 also incorporates power steering, tinted glass, a rear spoiler and rear-window Sport Slats, Detroit Locker differential and special axle ratio, factory Shaker hood, Magnum 500 wheels and an AM radio.
